To make the task feel less daunting, Derrick Valenti of the Warwick Allerton Chicago Hotel came up with a list of steps to ensure that couples will find the right place for their ceremony and reception.

Step 1: Focus on your initial feeling when you walked into the venue. This is how most of your guests will probably feel too. It’s a good idea to write it down so that you can compare it to the other venues you visit.

Step 2: Figure out how many people the location can accommodate, as the venue usually has a guest count maximum. This is why it’s a good idea to start with a short guest list, and then add guests depending how many the venue can hold. For bigger wedding parties, hotels are your best option because they typically have larger ballrooms for receptions, as well as a separate area for the ceremony.

Step 3: You should already have a timeframe in mind for when you want to get married. When you visit the venue, be sure to check its availability on your preferred dates.

Step 4: Of course, it’s very important to take your budget into consideration. A lot of couples make the mistake of falling in love with a place and then end up spending half their budget on it. Depending on where you are getting married, you should aim to spend 10-15% of the budget on the venue.

Step 5: Regardless of where you plan to have your wedding, it’s vital to take into account the weather. For an outdoor wedding, make sure the venue has a backup plan. Weather can also affect driving conditions for your guests. If you plan to have your wedding at a hotel where most of your guests are staying, this could alleviate some of the stress of unpleasant weather conditions, as well as organizing transportation for your guests.
